Needless to say, as with all new things you have a learning curve and discomfort for a while. As I was getting ready for the first webinar using the new system, I could tell I was really nervous. Although I had practiced the new system and had all of my instructions written down to follow, I WAS NERVOUS. The good news is that I made it through both sessions and didn’t suffer any major catastrophes! Not that both webinars were flawless, but nothing that stood in the way of presenting the information. I share this story to point out the transition of going to what was old and familiar to something new. Part of any transition is a level of discomfort. It doesn’t matter if it’s a new system, new person or a new job. We emotionally react the same each time we go through a transition. The only thing that may be different is how long and how intense our level of discomfort may be. Our life is a constant river of change. We don’t always notice all of the change but it’s central to our existence (and survival). The thing we don’t do well in our culture is to help each other recognize the emotional reaction we have with the change. Mostly, we like to ignore it and pretend it’s not there. We also sometimes think there is something wrong with us or with the situation. While I could go on and on about transition and our reactions (I teach whole classes on this topic), I will spare you to keep this light as we speed toward the weekend. Let me just leave you with a thought about Let me just leave you with a thought about transition: The next time you’re feeling uncomfortable in a new situation, rather than thinking something is wrong; acknowledge that you’re normal. Critical Reasoning Question Types-Assumption questions BobbiM Feb 4, 2014 An assumption bridges the gap between an arguments evidence and conclusion.  Its a piece of support that isnt explicitly stated, but that is required for the conclusion to remain valid.  When a question asks you to find an authors assumption, its asking you to find the statement without which the argument falls apart Denial Test To test whether a statement is necessarily assumed by an author, we can employ the Denial Test.  Heres how it works:  Simply deny or negate the statement and see if the argument falls apart.  If it does, that choice is a necessary assumption.  If, on the other hand, the argument is unaffected, the choice is wrong.  Consider this simple stimulus: Allyson plays volleyball for Central High School. Therefore, Allyson must be over 6 feet tall. You should recognize the second sentence as the conclusion and the first sentence as the evidence for it.  But is the argument complete?  Obviously not.  The piece thats missing-the unstated link between the evidence and conclusion-is the assumption, and you could probably prephrase this one pretty easily: All volleyball players for Central High School are over 6 feet tall. Is this an assumption really necessary to the argument?  Lets negate it using the Denial Test.  What if its not true that all volleyball players for Central High are taller than 6 feet?  Can we still logically conclude that Allyson must be taller than 6 feet?  No, we cant.  Sure, she might be, but she also might not be.  By denying the statement, then, the argument falls to pieces; it is no longer valid.  And thats our conclusive proof that the statement above is a necessary assumption of this argument. So, we can use the Denial Test to chick whether a statement is an assumption, but what if we havent a clue about what the assumption is?  Is there a way to track it down?  Sure enough, there is? Compare the ideas in the evidence with those in the conclusion.  If the conclusion has an idea (an important word) but the evidence does not, then youve found an assumption.  A new idea cannot occur in the conclusion, so there must be an assumption about this idea.  Every idea in the conclusion need support-that is, evidence.  While it may not be quite clear what the assumption is, knowing something about it allows us to prephrase and eliminate choices. As weve just seen, you can often prephrase the answer to an Assumption question.  By previewing the question stem, youll know what to look for.  And stimuli for Assumption questions just feel as if theyre missing something.  Often, the answer will jump out at you, as it did here.  But in more difficult Assumption questions, it might not be so obvious.  Either way, use the Denial Test to quickly check whichever choice seems correct. Today, we will be going over 5 practice problems that fall under these three categories. Question 1 â€" Select two answer choices that, when used to complete the sentence, fit the meaning of the sentence as a whole and produce completed sentences that are alike in meaning. After being bedridden for months, James found that his muscles had atrophied, which initially ____ his ability to walk or life heavy objects. belittled castigated hampered bolstered curtailed improved Background: This question falls under the verbal reasoning portion of the GRE and can be categorized as a sentence equivalence question. These question types generally have a single sentence and will ask you to choose two answers to fill in the blank. The end goal is to find two answer choices that will ultimately lead to the same meaning when inserted into the sentence. As MajorTests states, both choices must be right; there is no credit given for getting only one choice correct.This question type is fairly common. Analysis: To find the correct answer here we need to analyze what the word in the blank’s purpose is. Here, the word will describe the manner in which James will now walk since his muscles have atrophied. We can assume that the answer will entail that he cannot walk very well, so we are looking for words with a negative connotation here. Stepping through each answer choice, ask yourself whether it is positive- if so, cross it out. This leads us to crossing out D and F. Out of the remaining answers, the only ones that make sense in this situation are C. hampered and E. curtailed. These are our answers. Analysis: Here, we must look for the word that informs us of how the land grades into the ice. Step through each answer choice and determine which one describes the phenomenon of the land grades moving into the ice that results in you being unaware of being over the hidden sea. Answer choice A, permanently, would complete the sentence but it fails to explain the phenomenon in question- so this is not our answer. Answer choice C, irregularly, also would complete the sentence, but yet again fails to explain how. Answer choice D, precariously, does not seem to explain the how as well. Answer choice E, slightly, does not work if inserted into the blank as the rest of the sentence would not make sense. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.” The best approach to an “analyze an issue” question type is to organize your thoughts on the issue and craft a well-thought out and organized analysis. In this question, first determine whether you are going to agree or disagree with the statement. Once you choose you stance on the issue, make a quick bullet point list of statements in support of your argument. For example, if you chose to agree here you could make a point to discuss that this would ensure that the college admissions process would be an even-playing field as everyone’s GPA would be reflected from the same level of classes. Find 3-5 points to make and provide reasoning as to why for each. Ensure that you have addressed every issue that the question asks of you, and always wrap the argument up with a proper conclusion. The second question type, analyze an argument, also has a variety of potential prompts. Here is an example of one: “The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station: Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level. Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.” The best approach to an “analyze an argument” question type is to determine your overall conclusion and make supporting statements in light of that. For example, here you first must determine what evidence is needed here. We could state that we would like to conduct research based on a sample population of the average watcher to determine whether there is actually a correlation between cancelled advertisements and the airtime of weather and local news. After stating this, discuss how this research would weaken or strengthen the argument of needing to increase air time of weather and local news. Results from a thorough evaluation will let you and your childs teacher know exactly which reading skills are weak, will identify whether or not your child has a specific reading disorder that needs to be addressed, and will explain how your childs ADHD symptoms and difficulties with motivation are impacting his or her reading development. All of this information will help you and your childs teachers identify strategies and services that are tailored to meet your childs needs. Extra instructional support at school and through afterschool learning and tutoring programs can help your child learn basic and complex reading skills that he or she may have missed during regular classroom instruction. Many kids with ADHD are reluctant to read and go out of their way to avoid of reading. When they do read they choose books that are too easy for them or are very short. Unfortunately, this reluctance limits their opportunities to practice reading and gain essential skills. As a parent, there are many things you can do to help your child get the reading practice that is needed, without engaging in stressful arguments or negotiations. Here are some suggestions to get you started: Read to your child. Even kids who do not like to read enjoy having someone else read to them. Reading to your child can help improve his or her skills, especially when you have your child read along and ask your child to share his or her predictions and observations about the story. Take turns reading. If your child resists reading, offer to alternate reading aloud with him or her. For young children this might mean that they read one word or sentence and then you read the next word or sentence. For older children you can alternate paragraphs. Keep going and before you know it, youre child will have read half of a book! Supplement with skills practice on reading apps. Studies suggest that kids with ADHD may benefit from practicing their reading skills using computer-based reading programs. Bluster is a fun vocabulary building app, Montessori Crosswords is great for learning phonics, and Mad Libs can be a fun way for kids 4th grade and up to practice vocabulary and reading comprehension. Help your child explore websites on topics that they enjoy. Exploring interesting websites can be a great way for kids to practice reading without even realizing they are building new skills! Sit with your child and ask him or her to share what he or she is learning as he or she reads. This will improve his or her comprehension, and youll be sure that he or she is not skipping the text and only looking at pictures. With support and practice kids with ADHD can develop into strong readers. If you suspect that your childs reading skills are not as strong as they should be, dont wait.
